How to play Rope
Rope is one long rope that climbs up through world after world. You have 30 seconds on the clock. Climb as high as you can before it runs out.
The daily climb
- Three tries a day. Each try starts the moment you press Start, and your best one is your score for the day.
- Everyone climbs the same rope. Each day's rope is numbered (Rope #1, Rope #2…), and a new one arrives every day at 17:00 UTC.
- Every rope is different. Each day's worlds are a different length, and most days bring a twist: a downpour in the storm, a flock of birds, shooting stars. Ropes also get harder through the week: Monday's is the gentlest, Sunday's the toughest.
- Flags buy time. Every 100 meters there's a flag on the rope. Reach it and seconds are added to your clock, and you can never slip back below a flag you've passed. Flags give less time on each lap of the rope, so sooner or later the clock wins.
- Share your climb. After any try, share your best so far: a line of the worlds you reached and a link, so friends can see if they can climb higher.
- Keep a streak. Use your three tries every day to build your streak. Tap Stats on the menu to see your record: days played, your streak, your best streak and your highest climb.
The worlds
The rope climbs up through four layers, always in the same order: the ground, the weather, the sky and space. Each layer has its own worlds, and each world has its own kind of rope that climbs in its own way. Some want a tap at just the right moment, some want you to hold on and let go, and some want you to tap the right side. Every one of them takes a single finger: tap or press the screen, or use the keyboard on a computer.
Every day picks one world for each layer, so the climb changes from day to day. At the top of space a portal drops you back on the ground for another lap, a little harder each time round. New worlds join the rope over time.
Before you reach a new world, a sign near the top of the screen tells you what's next and how to climb it. For your first moments on a new rope, a slip costs nothing. Find the rhythm and you'll climb faster.
The worlds so far
The Meadow (ground). The rope: your hand reaches up for the knot. Tap as it gets there.
The Jungle (ground). Vines: a grab spot lights up on the left or the right. Tap that side, or use the arrow keys.
The Storm (weather). The wet rope: hold to climb, and let go before your grip slips into the red.
The Kites (sky). The kite string: slide your finger sideways to keep the kite in the wind, and it pulls you up.
The Clouds (sky). The spring rope: hold to coil it and let go on the gold. Birds fly across above you, so wait while one passes.
The Asteroids (space). The grapple: tap a glowing rock to grapple up to it, before it drifts away.
Outer Space (space). The zero-G tether: stars drift in to your hand. Tap as one lands, then coast.
Want to practice? Open the Climbing Gym from the menu. Every rope is there with no clock, and a Show Me button that climbs it for you so you can see how it's done.
Tips for climbing higher
- Every rope rewards rhythm over speed. Mashing loses more height than it gains.
- When a ring closes in on something, that's your moment: act as it lands.
- Clean moves in a row build a streak that climbs you faster.
- The rope gets harder the higher you go, and flags give less time on each lap.
Questions
Is Rope free?
Yes. Rope is free to play in any modern browser, on a phone or a computer, with nothing to download and no account.
Why only three tries?
So every day's climb matters, and everyone's score means the same thing. Your best try counts, and tomorrow there's a new rope.
Where is my score saved?
In your own browser, on your device. Clearing this site's data resets it. See the privacy page.
Can I turn the sound off?
Yes. The speaker button in the top corner of the menu, or Sound on the pause screen.
Is everyone's rope the same?
Yes. Everyone climbs the same rope each day: the same worlds, the same lengths and the same twist. That's what makes comparing scores fair. A new rope arrives every day at 17:00 UTC.
Why is today's rope different from yesterday's?
Each day's worlds are a different length, most days bring a twist (a downpour in the storm, a flock of birds, shooting stars). Most climbs start in the meadow (some days start somewhere new), and the portal back down from the top can drop you somewhere new too. Ropes also get harder through the week: Monday's is the gentlest and Sunday's the toughest.
What are the flags for?
Every 100 meters there's a flag on the rope. Reach it and seconds are added to your clock, and you can never slip back below a flag you've passed. Flags give a little less time on each lap, so sooner or later the clock wins.
What happens at the top of space?
You climb into a portal. It drops you back on the ground to start another lap, and the clock waits while you fall. Each lap is a little harder than the one before.
How do streaks work?
Use all three of your tries on a day and your streak goes up by one. Miss a day and it starts again from zero. Tap Stats on the menu to see your streak and your best one.
Where did my progress go?
Your tries, best, streak and stats are saved in your browser on your device. Clearing your browser's data, browsing privately, or switching to another browser or device starts you fresh. Rope has no accounts, so there's no way to restore them.
Does Rope work on my phone, tablet or computer?
Yes, in any modern browser: Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge. On a computer, the space bar climbs, the arrow keys work on vines, and Esc pauses.
Is there an app?
Not yet, but you can put Rope on your home screen like one. On an iPhone, open ropethegame.com in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, open it in Chrome, open the menu, and tap Add to Home screen or Install app.
Is Rope OK for kids?
Rope is a friendly game with no chat, no accounts and nothing to buy. It's made for players aged 13 and up, and it's supported by ads.
How do I report a bug or send an idea?
Email hello@ropethegame.com. For a bug, tell us what happened, which world you were in, and which device and browser you were using.
