Terms of use
Effective October 9, 2026
Thanks for climbing. These terms are the rules for using Rope at ropethegame.com (the "game"). In them, "Rope", "we" and "us" mean the people who make and run the game. By playing, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't play. How we handle information is covered separately in our privacy policy.
1. Who can play
Rope is for people aged 13 and over. If you live somewhere that sets a higher minimum age for using online services without a parent's permission (some countries use up to 16), you need to meet that age or have a parent or guardian's permission. If you're under 18, please read these terms with a parent or guardian.
2. Your license to play
Rope is free. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to play the game in your browser for your own non-commercial fun. You don't get ownership of the game or any part of it.
3. Fair play
Please don't:
- use bots, scripts or automated tools to play, or to scrape or copy the game or its content;
- use the game or its content to train or build AI or machine learning models;
- copy, rehost, mirror or embed the game (for example in an iframe) on another site or app, or pass it off as your own;
- reverse engineer, decompile or take apart the game's code or files, except where the law clearly lets you;
- tamper with, overload or attack the site, or try to get around its security;
- make share links or images that pretend to show a score you didn't get, to mislead people;
- use the game for anything illegal.
Comparing scores and talking strategy is all fine. So is streaming or posting videos of yourself playing, as long as you don't suggest we endorse you.
4. Your progress lives in your browser
Rope has no accounts. Your tries, best height, streak, stats and climber's look are saved only in your browser on your device. We can't see them, back them up or restore them. Your progress can disappear if you clear your browser's data, browse privately, switch browsers or devices, or if your browser deletes stored data.
5. Share links
When you share a result, Rope makes a link (like ropethegame.com/s/9-412) that shows an image of a score. You're welcome to share these anywhere. Share links are built from the link itself and aren't checked against anything, so treat other people's scores with a friendly pinch of salt. Rope doesn't host anything you write or upload.
6. Who owns what
Rope's name, logo, artwork, animation, levels, code and design belong to us, except for the third-party parts below. Please don't use the Rope name or logo in a way that suggests your thing is official or that we endorse it.
Rope uses some openly licensed work under its own licenses: Twemoji graphics by Twitter, Inc. and contributors (CC-BY 4.0), the Fredoka font (SIL Open Font License) and the Rive runtime (MIT License). The full notices are in the open-source notices. Nothing in these terms limits your rights under those licenses.
If you send us feedback or ideas, we can use them freely, with no obligation to you.
7. Ads and other services
Rope is free because it's supported by ads from Google. Where the law requires it (including in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland), you'll be asked for consent before ads are personalized, and we honor Global Privacy Control signals. We also use Vercel Web Analytics, which doesn't use cookies. The privacy policy explains how this works and what your choices are. Ads and links to other sites are run by others; their own terms and privacy policies apply when you use them.
8. Changes to the game and these terms
Rope is a living game. We may change, pause or stop any part of it, including the daily ropes, at any time, and we'll try to give a heads-up for big changes on the updates page. We may also update these terms. When we do, we'll change the effective date above, and for important changes we'll put a notice on the site. If you keep playing after changes take effect, the new terms apply. If you don't like them, you can stop playing.
9. Ending things
You can stop playing whenever you like. If someone breaks these terms, we may block their access to Rope. Sections 6, 9, 10, 11 and 12 keep applying after that.
10. No promises
Rope is a free game. To the extent the law allows, it's provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don't promise the game will always be online or bug-free, or that your progress will be kept.
11. Limits on our liability
To the extent the law allows, we're not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, lost progress or lost profits, arising from your use of Rope, and our total liability for any claim about Rope is limited to US $50.
Important for everyone, and especially players in the EU and UK: nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability that can't legally be limited or excluded. That includes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, and for gross negligence or willful misconduct, and any rights you have as a consumer under the laws of the country where you live. Some places don't allow some of the limits above, so they may not apply to you.
If you deliberately misuse Rope or break section 3 and that causes a claim against us, you agree to cover our reasonable costs from that claim, to the extent the law allows.
12. Disputes and governing law
If something's wrong, please email us first at hello@ropethegame.com so we can try to sort it out. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Tennessee, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in Tennessee, and either of us may use small claims court where it qualifies. If you're a consumer living in the EU, the UK or another country whose laws give you extra protection, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country, and you can bring a claim in the courts where you live.
13. Copyright concerns
If you think something in Rope infringes your copyright or other rights, email hello@ropethegame.com with what the work is, where it appears in Rope, your contact details, and a statement that you believe in good faith the use isn't authorized. We'll look into it promptly.
14. The small print
These terms and the privacy policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Rope. If part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce something right away, we haven't given up the right to enforce it later. You can't transfer these terms to someone else; we can transfer them if someone else takes over Rope, as long as your rights aren't reduced.
